The women of Wood Buffalo have been invited to enjoy the second annual World Hijab Day on February 1st from 12:30pm to 4:30pm. This event will be held at the Peter Pond Shopping Centre.

Last year was the inaugural event, which helps to encourage women to try on hijab to raise awareness and break down the stigmas associated with the headwear. With so many myths out there, this day helps to clear up some of those myths.

Those in charge of the World Hijab Day are hoping to spread awareness and show that it's not oppression. They stay that nobody forces them to wear the headdress and it's completely their decision to do it.

The Shootout on the Snye is one of the most Canadian things to happen throughout the Wood Buffalo area each year. This is a hockey shootout held on a frozen river. It's a timeless local tradition and includes teams of four to six players read to battle for bragging rights.

There are six different age divisions and each division plays a one or two pool round-robin format. This means that every team will get to play three or four games depending on the division size.

Games will be held on a total of 11 different rinks with one feature rink. Each game is 30 minutes long and includes a five-minute halftime break. Teams will play in a four-on-four format.

After the round-robin format a tournament will be as the winners advance to the playoffs.

The Suncor Community Leisure Centre at MacDonald Island Park is an area known to host many events throughout the year. This Fort McMurray facility will be hosting the first ever Syncrude Elite 10 on March 19 through March 22. This event is new to the Grand Slam of Curling series, which began during the 2001-2002 season.

The Syncrude Elite 10 is made up of 10 different men’s teams. They will compete for the tournament title. This event was put together by the top teams in the CHL league, as they presented a new way of playing to make this event truly unique. This has provided a lot of anticipation for team members and viewers, as no other event of its kind exists. The 2014-2015 season will be the debut for the Syncrude Elite 10 event.

MacDonald Island Park is a great place to go when you have the winter blues. Everyone starts to get a little bit of cabin fever during the winter time, as it is too cold to go outside.
