Several families in Wood Buffalo received Christmas early this year thanks to the donations of the Santa’s Anonymous program. Over 570 families in need were given Christmas dinners, groceries and toys for the holiday season thanks to the generosity of the community and Santa’s Anonymous.

The organization received the most referrals it has ever had and was able to help between 570-575 families last year according to Jennifer Downey, one of the main advisors for the organization. Here is a look at Santa’s Anonymous and how they helped Wood Buffalo.

Wood Buffalo is home to many events throughout the holiday season. However, the holiday season is nearly over. There will still be plenty of events you can enjoy throughout the area for 2015. Here's a look at some of the best events you can plan on attending this year.

Banff Mountain Film Festival - January 8th and 9th

This is one of the best film festivals of the year and will feature plenty of great shows. Tickets are $25 for general public and $20 for students and seniors. There will be a different film each night and the line ups should be released soon.

"Malanka" Ukraine New Year Celebration - January 18th

This celebration will be held at the Sawridge from 6pm to midnight. It will include plenty of dancing, dinner and more. Tickets

Sheldon Germain 3-On-3 Challenge - December 27th to 29th

This event is a youth hockey tournament and will be held over three days. There will be multiple divisions playing on three ice surfaces. Whether you will be playing or you just want to enjoy some good hokey action, this event is a great choice for plenty of fun.

The Stampeders in Concert - February 28th, 2015

For $49, you can get your tickets to see The Stampeders in concert. For $69, you can choose Reserved Seating tickets and enjoy this musical group from even better seats. The

Donations

It’s that time of year when holiday lights are everywhere and people are in the spirit of giving. That attitude has reached five local non-profit organizations as they have received an early Christmas gift from an annual campaign.

The Give with Heart initiative, a Good Neighbour Program through Syncrude, allows employees to choose a charitable organization that will get to receive company donations. Local organizations were chosen including the Fort McMurray Victim Services and Centre of Hope. Here is a look at all of the area non-profits that received wonderful holiday donations this year.

Demolishing

You may have heard that Penhorwood is going to be demolished next year. $3 million has been allocated for the demolition scheduled to be completed by February of 2015. Penhorwood is that condemned condo complex that had been evacuated at midnight three years ago.

A vote was done on in November in which the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s council agreed to allocate the $3 million towards demolishing the seven buildings of Penhorwood’s condominium complex. Here is a look at what is taking place and how it was decided.

Why are they demolishing?

The condominium complex of Penhorwood has been abandoned since March of 2011. At that time, safety officials had ordered an evacuation and ever since the vacant buildings have deteriorated

Theatre 

The Keyano Theatre & Arts Centre has reached its 35th season bringing theatre and art to the community. The 4-Play Drama Series is being presented by partners and friends of the Keyano Theatre Company and the Keyano College Foundation. Here is a look at what you can still enjoy this season including Cabaret and Good Night Ladies.

Cabaret

The musical Cabaret will be available to enjoy in February of 2015. The book is by Joe Masteroff, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. This powerful musical is about the world losing its way while you continue to follow your heart.
